      2009 Year Review

       

      Dear Team Herbalife,

               Congratulations! In the most difficult global economic climate in our lifetime, we did something that seemed unattainable just nine months ago — we delivered volume-point growth in 2009. If not for currency fluctuations, it would be a record net-sales and earnings year too.
              Let’s recap last year. We hit the ground running January 1, and never slowed down. We had more meetings, more events and more promotions for our Distributors in 2009 than ever before. We delivered on our commitment to get more vertical with the acquisition of our own manufacturing facility in North America, and increased our investment in testing equipment to increase our control over the quality of our products. We completed the global roll-out of Oracle, and started reaping the benefits; opening five new countries in 2009. We delivered upon our internal cost-reduction plan of $12 million, mostly within the supply chain area, and beat the budget for both operating income and earnings per share (EPS). We have a culture focused on both the top and bottom lines.
       
      More 2009 highlights:
      • We improved a number of our key products through the harmonization program and reformulated several to mitigate the impact of the value-added tax in Mexico.
      • We had success with regulatory authorities in Spain, Denmark and Iceland, and with the FDA in the U.S.
      • We continued to build our brand through our company sports sponsorships: 49 worldwide and our 46 Distributor marketing-fund sponsorships. We also have 72 individual Distributors now doing their own sponsorships; everything from a Mexican soccer team and a triathlon in the Philippines, to small local teams and events.
      • We continued to roll-out tools to our Distributors to help them build their businesses and our brand.
      • We launched our social media activities and now have 33,000 fans on Facebook and 2,000 following our tweets on Twitter.
      • HFF launched 11 new Casa Herbalife programs; we now work with 50 children’s charities on six continents, bringing better nutrition to children in need.
